This was a quick-turnaround Captivate lab (done within one week). The assignment was to choose one of Mayer's multimedia principles and create a Captivate module to review. The module had to include a quiz. Developing this module allowed me to review and apply the Coherence Principle, making it a meta-learning experience for me (and hopefully other participants!)
Rapid practice on Captivate labs was incredibly helpful in this course, and this project was no exception. I was mindful of the importance of taking time to structure the master template upfront (which saved time later!). I had some familiarity with Captivate before starting this course from prior work experience, and I was keen to experiment with different elements.
I applied the Coherence Principle and many of Mayer's other principles in the design of this module. I used a friendly avatar to create personalization and limited displaying text that mimicked the audio (and instead favored audio with graphics). I wanted to add engagement and life into the course without adding distracting elements (true to the Coherence Principle). The result was adding in the opening activity, which was also intended to gain the learner's attention and relate the Coherence Principle to something simple and straightforward. The activity was a fun simple way of demonstrating the value of eliminating clutter that I hope you enjoy!
I used a Zoom H2N microphone to record all audio. I edited the audio in Audacity. Images and references are listed on the sources screen.
